01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Break into the thick pancake, and the rich flavour of egg rises along with the soft, fine-crumbed texture of the batter. At Kiyono in Ota Ward's Kamatahoncho, this egg-rich dorayaki—known as Mukashi Tamago no Dorayaki—is what draws many patrons through the door. Enclosed within the gently springy crust is a moist red bean filling with an understated sweetness. The clean finish lets the ingredients lead, making it a reliable treat alongside green tea as well as a popular gift to take home from Kamata.
Beside the dorayaki, the glass showcase features confections steeped in the neighbourhood's character. Inspired by the area's natural kuroyu dark-water hot springs, the Kamata Onsen Manju is a petite steamed bun pairing a lightly fragrant brown-sugar wrapper with smooth strained adzuki paste—a natural stop on the way back from the baths. The counter also offers sturdy, unpretentious sweets such as Umehime, filled with a milk-scented yolk bean paste, Kuri Hitotsubu with whole chestnut, and seasonal mugwort kusamochi.
Sweets can be bought individually from just 1 piece, making them convenient when you want a small sweet bite during a walk. Shelves can run low toward the evening, especially for the popular dorayaki, so arriving earlier in the day or arranging to hold items in advance is a sensible precaution if you have specific treats in mind.
